Welcome to Ms. Coca's Language Arts Classroom
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
My name is Ms. Coca and I am the 8th grade Language Arts teacher. Not only do I have 23 years of experience as a Chicago Public School teacher but I am also a product of Chicago Public Schools, for which I am very proud of. In addition, I have taught 8th grade Language Arts for the past 13 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Education with a focus in reading instruction. I also have a Bilingual and English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement which provides me the knowledge and skills to effectively teach English language learners in the mainstream classroom.
My classroom focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening with 21st century skills that incorporate Common Core State Standards. This is achieved through critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. Since reading and writing are intertwined, we will study how to read deeply and how to write well. The goal of my class is to introduce my students to a variety of literature that encourages us to ask questions, allows us to examine the way we see ourselves, to handle conflicts and challenges, and to understand, as well as, shape our community.
Student grades are based on a variety of class assignments, group work, reading and writing assessments, projects, participation, and homework (Please review additional Information included on my webpage). Thus, in an effort to increase communication between parents/guardians and students, I encourage the use of my email as a primary form of contact. You may also continue to contact me by phone, if you have any questions or concerns.
Looking forward to a wonderful and productive school year!
Ms. C. Coca
